History of the Cafetiera
A Brief History
The cafetière or the French press as it’s known in the United States has a past shrouded in mystery. Both the French and the Italians lay claim to its invention – we don’t really know which it is, but we do know they first appeared in France in the 1850s.
A lovely story tells us of a Frenchman that used to go on daily walks to avoid his wife. His usual companions were some food, firewood and an old coffee pot. One day, whilst making his coffee, he forgot to add the coffee grounds and didn’t realise his mistake until the water was boiling. He added the coffee grounds in but as they rose to the top, he realised it would taste revolting and he would end up with teeth full of coffee bits!
A passing Italian merchant was carrying a metal screen, the Frenchman bought a section of the screen and using a stick, pushed the screen material over the coffee, pushing it to the bottom of the pot. The two men shared the resulting drink and both agreed it was the best drink they’d ever had.
Allegedly, they went on to open up a small factory together, replicating the magical contraption.
It’s a lovely story that manages to credit both nations that claim origin, whether its true or not, we’ll never really know.
What we do know, is that in 1969 a company called Household Articles Ltd. started to manufacture and sell the coffee pots we know and love to use today.
